====== Install Specific Video Card Driver ====== As I'm using a W150HRW Clevo laptop equipped with an Nvidia GT555M video card, i'd like to have it's specific driver installed and used instead of "vesa". At first I though that this article on the Debian wiki would be my savior, but a little line at the end of the page indicated that, as the happy owner of an **Optimus** hardware, I should have a look at the Bumblebee Project... reading through those references will eventually lead you back to... the debian wiki you started from!\\ To be precise, you'll get back to the Debian wiki page about Bumblebee, where you'll find installation instructions: ===== Identify Driver and Hardware ===== First, to know **what driver is effectively in use**: > cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep vesa [ 3620.066] vesa [ 3620.078] (II) LoadModule: "vesa" [ 3620.078] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vesa_drv.so [ 3620.078] (II) Module vesa: vendor="X.Org Foundation" [ 3620.081] (II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa [ 3620.174] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa Now to identify the **type of GPU** your system is equipped with: > lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0126] (rev 08) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M] [10de:0dce] (rev a1) ===== Install Bumblebee ===== As stated on the Debian wiki: "For Wheezy users, Bumblebee packages are available from wheezy-backports". This means we first need to add the backports in our sources. To keep the system as clean as possible, you may want to add a file inside **/etc/apt/sources.list.d/ **rather than editing the **sources.list** file.\\ Here we'll create the **other-sources.list** file, then update our package list: > nano /etc/apt/other-source.list ADD: deb http://ftp.belnet.be/debian wheezy-backports main > apt-get update We can now install the Nvidia driver from the backports:\\ **To use the free, "nouveau" driver:** > apt-get -t wheezy-backports install bumblebee primus **To use the proprietary, "nvidia" driver:** > apt-get -t wheezy-backports install bumblebee-nvidia primus
